About BFPD

Our Story

Four Decades of Service in the Eastern Sierra

Founded in 1979, the Bridgeport Fire Protection District was created to provide organized fire protection to the remote Bridgeport Valley and surrounding communities of Mono County. What began as a small group of neighbors with a shared commitment to public safety has grown into a capable, well-trained volunteer department serving an area that spans from the town of Bridgeport through the Twin Lakes corridor and into the Eastern Sierra backcountry.

At 6,800 feet elevation, our coverage area presents unique challenges. Harsh alpine winters bring sub-zero temperatures and heavy snowfall. Summers bring extreme heat and wildfire risk across vast stretches of sagebrush, Jeffrey pine, and mixed conifer. Our volunteers must be prepared for structure fires, wildland fires, vehicle extrication, hazardous materials incidents, swift-water rescues, and medical emergencies — often in locations where response times are measured not in minutes, but in the time it takes to reach a remote trailhead or ranch.

Every member of this department lives and works in the Bridgeport area. They're not career firefighters waiting at a station — they're ranchers, teachers, business owners, and tradespeople who drop everything when the tones sound. That's the heart of what makes BFPD work: neighbors protecting neighbors, with professional-grade training and genuine community investment.

"The Bridgeport Valley sits at 6,800 feet in the Eastern Sierra Nevada — our volunteers respond to remote terrain, wildland fires, and year-round extreme conditions that test every aspect of their training."

Fire Chief

Chief Nick Way

Chief Way has served the Bridgeport Fire Protection District for over 15 years, rising through the ranks from volunteer firefighter to department chief. A lifelong Eastern Sierra resident, he brings deep knowledge of the local terrain, fire behavior, and the unique challenges of protecting a remote mountain community.

"Every time the tones drop, our volunteers leave their families and jobs to protect this community. That's not a duty — that's a calling."

Leadership

Leading From the Front

Under Chief Way's leadership, BFPD has expanded its training program, secured critical equipment grants, and strengthened mutual aid relationships with agencies across the Eastern Sierra including CalFire, the US Forest Service, and Mono County emergency services.

His hands-on approach means he's often the first to arrive on scene — whether it's a wildland fire in August or a vehicle accident on a snowy Highway 395 in January. He leads by example and inspires every volunteer who serves alongside him.
