There are four main types of garage doors, each with its own advantages. Choosing the right style affects curb appeal, security, insulation, and how your opener performs.
Roll-up doors use horizontal slats that coil above the opening. They save interior space and are popular for commercial properties, though residential use is growing. They’re durable and work well where headroom is limited.
Sectional doors are the most common residential choice. Panels hinge and travel along horizontal tracks into the garage ceiling. They offer excellent insulation options, many styles, and pair well with modern openers.
Side-hinged doors swing open like traditional barn or carriage doors. They offer a classic look and easy pedestrian access through one leaf, but need clear driveway space to swing outward.
One-piece tilt-up doors pivot as a single slab. They’re simpler mechanically but require more exterior clearance and are less common on new homes than sectional systems.
